Jeju Police Apply Zero-Tolerance Policy to Violators of Infectious Disease Control Act
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Provincial Police Agency announced on the 23rd that it will strengthen crackdowns and conduct strict investigations on violators of the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act, such as violations of mandatory self-quarantine and non-compliance with gathering restriction measures, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Despite the implementation of various quarantine measures in Jeju Province, cases of violations continue to occur.
The Jeju Police have investigated a total of 28 cases involving 32 individuals for violations of the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act related to COVID-19, and have referred 28 individuals to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment.
The types of violations include 19 cases of quarantine violations, 8 cases of violations of gathering bans (restrictions), and 1 case of obstruction of epidemiological investigations.
In particular, with the recent surge in confirmed cases and the implementation of social distancing level 2 administrative measures, the number of individuals subject to self-quarantine has increased, and as quarantine measures are strengthened, Jeju Police plan to prepare for an increase in cases of unauthorized departure from quarantine locations and non-compliance with quarantine rules such as bans on gatherings at entertainment establishments.
The Jeju Police have established a hotline with local governments and health authorities to maintain a rapid cooperation system, and plan to strictly investigate and punish violations of the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act.
Under the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act, violators of mandatory self-quarantine may face imprisonment for up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million won, and violators of local government gathering bans (restrictions) may be fined up to 3 million won.
