No Statement Yet from Seol Minseok Regarding 'Historical Distortion' Controversy
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon] The history lecturer Seol Min-seok, CEO of the education company 'Dankkum Education,' has become embroiled in a controversy over historical distortion after a scholar criticized numerous errors in his lecture on Egypt aired on a broadcast. The scholar even advised viewers not to watch the program. As the controversy grew, the production team explained that it was merely an editing issue.
However, Seol himself, who gave the lecture, has remained silent for four days since the controversy arose, prolonging the ripple effects of the historical distortion debate.
Viewers are divided in their opinions. Some see the controversy as just a variety show issue and an editing problem, while others argue that Seol should clearly state his position. Some have even harshly criticized him by referring to the slang term 'gura,' meaning 'lie,' with comments like "Isn't this gura?" and "He's Gura Min-seok."
The controversy over Seol's lecture on historical distortion occurred on the 19th. The tvN history variety show 'Seol Min-seok's Naked World History' started airing on the 12th with the concept of making world history easy and fun to understand.
The episode that sparked the historical distortion controversy was the Egypt episode aired on the 19th. Immediately after the broadcast, Egyptian archaeologist Kwak Min-su pointed out numerous errors in the content. Kwak majored in cultural anthropology at Hanyang University and Egyptology at Oxford and Durham Universities in the UK. He also served as an advisor for the episode.
On the 20th, Kwak posted on his Facebook, stating, "There are so many factual inaccuracies that it’s hard to mention them one by one," criticizing Seol's lecture content.
Specifically, Kwak said, "Claims such as Alexander the Great founding the Library of Alexandria or comparing names like Ptolemy and Cleopatra to surnames or titles, likening them to the title 'Dangun,' are truly absurd," adding, "Saying 'Veni Vidi Vici' was spoken in Egypt upon returning to Rome is just a minor issue."

Regarding the nature of the history variety show, he said, "I have serious concerns about mixing verified facts with mere rumors and gossip under the guise of telling 'fun history stories,'" criticizing, "This program hosted by Seol Min-seok epitomizes that problem."
On the lecture style that simplifies historical facts to aid understanding, he noted, "While mixing historical facts and rumors can be an effective strategy to attract interest, if the goal is to tell 'history stories' rather than just 'gura storytelling,' facts and rumors must be clearly distinguished," adding, "Moreover, the factual inaccuracies themselves were frequent."
Kwak also pointed out that his advisory input was not properly reflected in the episode. He said, "It seems my advisory content was not well incorporated, so I advise people not to watch it." He reiterated his criticism, hoping that the social awareness regarding figures like 'Seol Min-seok types' would increase.
As the controversy continued, the production team issued a statement on the 21st, explaining that the issue stemmed from simple broadcast editing.
The production team explained, "Since we cover vast stories of world history, each episode involves about 4 to 5 hours of recording," adding, "To provide viewers with immersive stories, we compress and edit the content, making it difficult to include all the lengthy historical lectures, so we proceed according to the broader historical context." They continued, "Although some parts were omitted, we judged that the overall coherence was not significantly affected and aired the final product. We sincerely apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable."

Considering his influence, critics argue that the historical distortion issue cannot be resolved simply as a misunderstanding caused by editing.
A man in his 40s, Kim, who said he frequently watches broadcasts featuring Seol, said, "I became a fan of lecturer Seol Min-seok after watching the movie 'The Admiral: Roaring Currents' released in July 2014," adding, "His history lectures related to the movie were truly impressive." He continued, "But due to this historical distortion controversy, I can't help but wonder if his other lectures have issues as well," urging, "For fans like me, it would be better if he directly clarified his position on this matter."
Another office worker in his 30s, Lee, said, "Seol Min-seok is very active on broadcasts and has significant public influence, so it's disappointing that he hasn't expressed any position despite this issue," criticizing, "This is a big problem not only for viewers of the broadcast but also for students attending his lectures. I hope he clarifies his stance as soon as possible." He also expressed frustration, saying, "Isn't this just gura storytelling, 'Gura Min-seok'?"

A college student in their 20s, Kim, said, "I agree that historical distortion can occur, but isn't this a variety show?" adding, "It seems the editing had some problems as the production team stated." He added, "I hope people understand that variety shows are just variety shows."
A company employee in their 30s, Park, said, "It seems the criticism is about some exaggerated parts," adding, "History is ultimately about descendants researching and proving what happened in the past, and that proof can sometimes be incorrect or change. Isn't that history?" He continued, "There is also the saying that history is a matter of interpretation, so I think the claim that it is absolutely wrong is a bit off. Isn't there also an issue with the broadcast editing?"

Requests for a statement from 'Dankkum Education,' where Seol is CEO, were made, but no response was received.
