Strengthening Quarantine Measures Including Operation of 'Dedicated Poultry Farm Control'
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] Amid the recent nationwide outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) in poultry farms and wild birds, Chuncheon City in Gangwon Province, famous as the hometown of the 'Dakgalbi' dish, is making every effort to block the inflow of AI.
According to health authorities on the 20th, AI has currently occurred in 16 poultry farms and 29 wild birds nationwide. On the 8th, AI was detected in wild bird carcasses at the migratory bird habitat of Cheonsuman in Seosan.
In response, Chuncheon City announced on the same day, "The current avian influenza crisis alert is at the 'severe' level, and we are making every effort to block AI, including operating a 'Dedicated Management System for Poultry Farms.'"
The 'Dedicated Management System for Poultry Farms' aims to assign a person in charge for each commercial-scale poultry farm to manage quarantine measures such as disinfection.
The personnel assigned to each farm manage the establishment of a quicklime belt around the farm entrance for farm quarantine, daily cleaning and disinfection of the farmyard, changing boots when entering the livestock shed, compliance with hand disinfection, and daily disinfection inside the livestock shed.
Following the occurrence of AI in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, the area around the migratory bird habitat Udounsuji in Chuncheon was designated as a special AI management zone.
The city has issued orders restricting passenger car access to poultry farms within the special management zone and is also conducting guidance and publicity to prohibit walking and fishing activities.
Additionally, two disinfection vehicles equipped with wide-area sprayers have been deployed to intensively disinfect roads and poultry farm access roads within 3 km around Udounsuji.
On-site inspections are conducted, and corrective measures are taken for farms with deficiencies; farms that fail to comply will face administrative actions.
Currently, the number of poultry farms designated under Chuncheon City's dedicated management system is 30, raising a total of 490,000 birds.
