On the afternoon of the 18th, the HCIA Chief Candidate Recommendation Committee announced the results of the 5th meeting of the committee, stating, "The committee confirmed the withdrawal of candidates Seok Dong-hyun and Han Myeong-gwan and resolved to allow additional candidate recommendations until 6 p.m. on the 23rd." They added, "The next meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on the 28th to make the final decision on the HCIA Chief candidate recommendation, focusing only on the existing candidates under review and any additionally recommended candidates."
They further explained, "All committee members agreed to respect the Speaker of the National Assembly's request for the nomination of successor members, setting aside legal debates, and to strive for a smooth consensus in recommending the HCIA Chief candidate, thus deciding to reconvene the meeting."
On that day, the committee proceeded with one vacancy in the opposition party's quota after Lim Jeong-hyeok, a recommendation committee member from the People Power Party, resigned the previous day. While the People Power Party's Judiciary Committee members held a press conference in the morning, urging to fill the vacancy before resuming the meeting, the Democratic Party insisted on concluding the HCIA Chief candidate recommendation that day according to the HCIA Act amendment.
Lee Chan-hee, President of the Korean Bar Association and a member of the HCIA Chief Candidate Recommendation Committee, told reporters immediately after the meeting, "Putting legal issues aside, the Speaker of the National Assembly requested the nomination from the People Power Party's recommendation member, and all members agreed to select the candidate amicably, so we decided to reopen the meeting for selection." When asked what would happen if the People Power Party's recommendation member was not nominated by the 28th, he replied, "We will proceed with the meeting as it stands."
