View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] On the 17th, when a severe cold wave hit, the police patrolling the streets were busier than in any other year. They were on a so-called dual emergency duty of both crime prevention and quarantine.
Year-end crime prevention activities are already time-sensitive, but this year they also had to tightly manage the delicate "nerve" of COVID-19 quarantine.
With daily confirmed cases nationwide exceeding 1,000 for several days, and double-digit cases recorded daily in Busan as well, the police preparing for the year-end and New Year holidays are facing a double emergency.
The mindset behind this year’s special year-end and New Year crime prevention activities by the Busanjin Police is "Adding quarantine to crime prevention." This motto, like a famous advertising copy, reflects the heavy reality of the COVID-19 era.
On the 17th, the Beomcheon Precinct of the Busanjin Police Station was carrying out two missions in the representative precious metals shopping district of Busan and the densely populated area around Jungang Market.
They conducted special year-end crime prevention activities and "quarantine police" activities aimed at minimizing community COVID-19 infections.
They also had to wage war against voice phishing crimes that gnaw away at the harsh lives of ordinary people like cancer cells. To prevent the rapidly increasing messenger phishing, they visited stores to provide guidance and publicity.
The police visited gold and silver shops on Gold Theme Street to check the operation status of CCTV and identify blind spots, inspecting vulnerabilities in crime prevention. The preemptive crime prevention task of checking the barn before losing the cow has increased accordingly.
They also visited businesses handling cash, such as financial institutions and convenience stores, encouraging owners to strengthen their self-defense crime prevention capabilities, which was also the police’s responsibility.
On that day, Busanjin Police officers distributed voice phishing prevention leaflets to merchants at traditional markets such as Jungang Market and Pyeonghwa Market. They also continued guidance activities promoting mask-wearing to prepare in advance against the local spread of COVID-19.
