Korea's Reduced Data 3D Image Sensor Gains Attention at Semiconductor Olympics
UNIST Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Graduate Student Kim Beomjun Receives ISSCC 2021 Silk Road Award
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Junho] Research on image sensors conducted by a domestic graduate student was recognized for its excellence at the world's largest semiconductor conference, known as the "Semiconductor Olympics."
Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) announced on the 17th that graduate student Kim Beomjun from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering was selected as the recipient of the Silkroad Award at the 2021 International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC).
The Silkroad Award is given to outstanding students from the Asian region who present their first paper at ISSCC. Graduate student Kim Beomjun not only had his paper accepted at ISSCC for the first time this year but also received the honor of the award in recognition of his excellent achievement.
The research, for which graduate student Kim Beomjun was the first author, focused on improving the "3D LiDAR image sensor." There are various methods to acquire distance information of a specific space, and among them, the LiDAR sensor measures distances within an image by using the speed of light reflection. The problem is that these LiDAR sensors require processing a large amount of data after receiving light information to perform calculations. This study proposed a method that can reduce the data size by about 1,000 times compared to existing sensors.

Graduate student Kim Beomjun explained, "As the need for 3D spatial recognition for applications such as autonomous vehicles gradually increases, the requirement to use massive amounts of data has been a significant obstacle," adding, "We presented a method to improve this and achieved good results."
