Hyundai Construction "Consecutive Civil Engineering and Hospital Projects Secured in Qatar... Total Worth 350 Billion Won"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Hyundai Engineering & Construction has secured civil engineering and hospital construction contracts worth a total of 350 billion KRW in its traditional stronghold, Qatar. The contracts include a 252.6 billion KRW TSE (treated sewage effluent) storage facility installation project and a 98.2 billion KRW specialized nursing hospital fit-out project.
On the 17th, Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced that it had received the Letter of Award (LOA) for the 252.6 billion KRW TSE storage facility installation project, issued by the Public Works Authority, the largest client in Qatar's civil engineering sector. Hyundai Engineering & Construction evaluated this as "a fruit borne from the trust of the Public Works Authority in Hyundai Engineering & Construction, despite the recent trend of local Qatari companies submitting low bids."
The TSE storage facility installation project Hyundai Engineering & Construction won involves constructing reservoirs and related auxiliary facilities in Al Rakhiya, located about 50 km southwest of Doha, the capital of Qatar, to ensure stable supply of irrigation and agricultural water during the summer. The construction period is 35 months, with groundbreaking this month and completion targeted for November 2023.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction also received the Letter of Award (LOA) for a specialized nursing hospital fit-out project worth approximately 98.2 billion KRW, commissioned by Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar. This project involves converting a building that was previously used as accommodation for Asian Games athletes into a hospital. The hospital is located in central Doha, Qatar, and will be redesigned and constructed (Design & Build) as one building near the second phase of Hamad Medical City, which Hyundai Engineering & Construction has previously completed. The total floor area is 26,520 square meters with 272 beds.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction stated, "This is a very important project for the Qatari health authorities, who are struggling with the rapidly increasing number of COVID-19 patients, to secure a large number of hospital beds." The construction period is about 18 months, with groundbreaking this month and completion targeted for June 2022.
Since winning the second phase of Hamad Medical City in 2010, Hyundai Engineering & Construction has completed and is currently constructing the rehabilitation ward, women's hospital renovation, and Al Maha Pediatric and Adolescent Medical Center at Hamad Medical City. The specialized nursing hospital project, awarded in a Design & Build format where design capability is crucial, is seen as a result of the client recognizing Hyundai Engineering & Construction’s successful execution of the second phase hospital project at Hamad City in Qatar.
A Hyundai Engineering & Construction official said, "We consider it meaningful to have achieved valuable orders by the end of the year based on Hyundai Engineering & Construction’s technology, construction performance, experience, and trust with the client, even during the difficult times of COVID-19." He added, "We will continue to secure orders and become a leading company in the global construction market, not only in Qatar."
