Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Demonstrates Technological Excellence by Sweeping Year-End External Technology Awards
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has proven its technological competitiveness by sweeping various external technology awards at the end of the year.
DSME received numerous external technology awards by being selected for the Korea Technology Awards, World-Class Product, and Top 10 Mechanical Technologies of the Year, hosted by related organizations such as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, Korea Federation of Machinery Industry, and The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Among products developed domestically and successfully commercialized, the Korea Technology Awards annually recognize technologies with outstanding technical achievements and significant impact on domestic industry. DSME’s independently developed and domestically first exported "DSME 1400t-class Export Submarine" was selected. Additionally, DSME’s "Smart Energy Saving System" was chosen as one of the "Top 10 Mechanical Technologies of the Year," which recognizes excellent mechanical technologies developed in Korea. Furthermore, two products were selected as World-Class Products: the "DSME 1400t-class Export Submarine" and the "Ultra Large Container Ship," which includes the world’s largest 24,000 TEU container ship.
The "DSME 1400t-class Export Submarine," which achieved the double honor of being selected for both the Korea Technology Awards and World-Class Product, was ordered by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense in 2011 for three units worth approximately 1.3 trillion KRW, marking the first submarine export from Korea and setting the largest single defense export contract record in history. Subsequently, recognizing the submarine’s performance and technology, an additional three submarines were ordered in 2019, showcasing the excellence of Korea’s defense industry to the world.
The Smart Energy Saving System, selected as one of the Top 10 Mechanical Technologies of the Year, includes the Shaft Generator Motor System (SGMr) and Air Lubrication System (ALS). It is linked with DSME’s proprietary smart ship solution, DS4, and was developed to reduce fuel consumption while delivering optimal performance for vessels.
Applying this technology can save approximately 1 billion KRW annually in fuel costs compared to conventional ships, respond to greenhouse gas emission regulations, and dramatically improve overall energy efficiency of vessels, leading to increased interest and installation requests from shipowners.

The Ultra Large Container Ship (24,000 TEU class), selected as a World-Class Product, is an eco-friendly and high-efficiency vessel built with DSME’s own technology. It is equipped with a scrubber for desulfurization, enabling proactive compliance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) environmental regulations. This vessel was ordered in 2018 by HMM, Korea’s largest shipping company, with seven units commissioned to DSME, all of which have been successfully delivered. It stands as a representative outcome of the symbiotic relationship between Korea’s shipbuilding and shipping industries.
