[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] ○…'The Legend of Women's Golf' Annika Sorenstam (Sweden, photo) will participate in the U.S. Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour for the first time in 13 years.
Golfweek in the U.S. reported on the 16th (Korean time) that "Sorenstam will compete in the Diamond Resorts Tournament, which opens on January 22 next year at the Four Seasons Golf & Sports Club in Lake Buena Vista, Florida." Since retiring in 2008, she has occasionally appeared in event tournaments, but it has been a long time since she appeared in an official LPGA Tour event. She expressed her excitement by saying, "I took out my clubs and dusted them off," and "I am looking forward to the tournament."
The Diamond Resorts Tournament is a 'champion of champions' event where winners from the past three years compete. Active players and invited celebrities from sports and entertainment mingle and play, with separate rankings. Sorenstam will compete in the invited celebrity category. Players compete in the usual stroke play format, while celebrities play using the Stableford system. John Smoltz (USA), who has 213 wins in Major League Baseball, won the tournament two years in a row.
