Chosun University Concludes Singer Hong Jin-young's Master's Thesis Is Plagiarized
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Chosun University has tentatively concluded that singer Hong Jin-young's master's thesis is 'plagiarism,' drawing attention to whether her degree will be revoked in the future.
According to Chosun University on the 15th, the Research Integrity Committee under the University Research Ethics Institute recently investigated the plagiarism allegations regarding Hong Jin-young's master's thesis and sent an official letter indicating plagiarism to the Graduate School Committee.
The Graduate School Committee plans to receive Hong Jin-young's side of the story by the 18th and make a final decision on the plagiarism issue as early as next week.
If the master's thesis is ultimately confirmed as plagiarism, Hong Jin-young is likely to have not only her master's degree but also her doctoral degree revoked.
Moreover, with the university's plagiarism review body (Research Integrity Committee) clearly stating its position, the possibility of revoking Hong Jin-young's master's and doctoral degrees is gaining more weight.
When plagiarism allegations surfaced last month, Hong Jin-young expressed her intention to return her degree, saying, "All of this is my fault."
Hong Jin-young received her master's degree from the Department of Trade at Chosun University in 2009 with a thesis titled "A Study on Trends in the Cultural Content Industry through Hallyu," and later earned her doctoral degree from the same graduate school in 2012.
