According to Jeonnam Province on the 14th, the Jeonnam Provincial Cultural Center Federation and the Korea Federation of Arts and Culture Organizations Jeonnam Chapter issued a statement saying, "Gwangju Metropolitan City must relocate Gwangju Private Airport."
They protested Mayor Lee Yong-seop of Gwangju Metropolitan City for changing his stance, urging him not to break his promise made to 3.5 million city and provincial residents and to proceed with the relocation of Gwangju Private Airport.
They added, "The relocation of Gwangju Private Airport is a key issue that must be achieved for the mutual growth of Gwangju and Jeonnam and the development of the Honam region," emphasizing, "Since Gwangju City, Jeonnam Province, and Muan County signed an agreement to revitalize Muan International Airport and promised to relocate domestic flights by 2021, this must be upheld."
The Jeonnam Tourism Association and the Jeonnam Cultural Tourism Guide Association also issued a statement on the same day, saying, "The relocation of Gwangju Private Airport is a core issue for the promotion of tourism in the Honam region and mutual growth between the city and province," and added, "Since there is a promise to relocate domestic flights by next year, it must be kept."
They further stated, "Mayor Lee Yong-seop is claiming that the integration of the private airport is premised on the relocation of the military airport," emphasizing, "This is an irresponsible act that breaks the promise made to 3.5 million city and provincial residents since his candidacy that the private airport would be relocated unconditionally, separate from the military airport relocation."
Additionally, they said, "All tourism professionals in Jeonnam urge the withdrawal of the decision that contradicts the wishes of the residents who hope for the revitalization of Muan International Airport and call for the relocation of Gwangju Private Airport as promised."
Six economic and labor organizations in Jeonnam also voiced their opinions.
The Jeonnam Employers Federation, the National Merchants Federation Jeonnam Branch, the Jeonnam Social Enterprise Council, the Consumer Education Central Association Jeonnam Branch, the Korea Women Entrepreneurs Association Jeonnam Branch, and the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Jeonnam Regional Headquarters issued a statement expressing "deep concern and regret over Gwangju City's announcement that the timing of the relocation of Gwangju Private Airport will be decided in a four-party consultative body involving the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of National Defense, Gwangju, and Jeonnam, together with the military airport relocation issue."
