Seoul General High School Applicants Decrease by 8%... Impact of Declining Student Numbers
11.4% Decrease in Duplicate Applicants for Foreign Language High Schools and Autonomous Private High Schools
[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] The number of applicants to general high schools in the Seoul area has decreased by 8%. Duplicate applicants to international high schools, foreign language high schools, and autonomous private high schools also decreased by 11.4% compared to last year. This appears to be due to the decline in the number of students.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 14th that a total of 54,345 applicants applied to the late high schools selected by the Seoul Metropolitan Superintendent of Education. This is a decrease of 4,714 from last year's 59,059 applicants.
The status of applicants by type for the 2021 academic year Seoul Metropolitan Superintendent of Education late high schools is ▲general applicants 53,249 ▲athletic special talent 780 ▲children of veterans 115 ▲physically disabled 45 ▲special admission eligibility 156.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education explained that this is because the number of high school admission candidates has decreased. The total number of high school applicants this year is 66,438, which is 6,951 fewer than last year. A Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education official predicted that the number of students entering high school admission procedures will be even fewer than 54,345 as students who pass foreign language high schools, autonomous private high schools, etc., will drop out.
The number of schools assigned for late high school admission is the same as in the 2020 academic year, totaling 205 schools. Duplicate applicants to international high schools, foreign language high schools, and autonomous private high schools also decreased by 1,283 compared to last year, with 9,979 applicants. Among duplicate applicants, those who fail are included in the late high school assignment selected by the superintendent and are assigned accordingly.
The applicant acceptance criteria are determined according to the Enforcement Decree of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the 2021 Seoul Metropolitan High School Admission Basic Plan. Acceptance decision cutoff rates apply to general applicants, children of veterans, and physically disabled applicants. The acceptance decision criteria for athletic special talents and special admission eligibility are not related to middle school grades. Instead, they are reviewed by the Special Admission Eligibility Review Committee and the Special Talent Selection Committee.
