Jeju International School Students and Parents Confirmed with COVID-19
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Park Chang-won] A student and a parent from an international school in Jeju English Education City have tested positive for COVID-19.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 13th at around 12:30 PM that it received notification from the Jeju Provincial Institute of Health and Environment about the occurrence of the 111th and 112th confirmed cases in the Jeju area and immediately began an epidemiological investigation.
The 111th confirmed case, Mr. A, is a parent of a student attending an international school located in the Daejeong area of Seogwipo City, Jeju, and the 112th confirmed case, Mr. B, is identified as a student at the international school. They were notified on the night of the 12th as contacts of the 109th confirmed case in Jeju and visited the Seobu Health Center screening clinic in Seogwipo City at 8 AM on the 13th to have specimens collected. They were finally confirmed positive at 12:30 PM that day.
Both confirmed cases were classified as contacts during the epidemiological investigation immediately after the 109th case was confirmed. The 109th confirmed case, diagnosed on the afternoon of the 12th, is a family member of a confirmed case in Namdong-gu, Incheon, and is presumed to have been infected through contact with family members who visited Jeju from November 28 to 30.
Currently, Mr. A, the 111th confirmed case, is experiencing mild respiratory symptoms such as coughing and sputum, while Mr. B, the 112th confirmed case, is reported to have no specific COVID-19 related symptoms. Both individuals have been transferred to negative pressure isolation rooms at Seogwipo Medical Center for inpatient treatment.
Jeju’s quarantine authorities have secured their statements and are analyzing credit card usage records and CCTV footage to identify detailed movement paths and contacts. Once their detailed movements are confirmed, quarantine measures will be implemented, and contacts will undergo COVID-19 testing and be placed under isolation.
Previously, on the 19th of last month, a student (Jeju case number 65) at the international school was also confirmed positive for COVID-19.
Due to the occurrence of confirmed cases among students, the four international schools within Jeju English Education City will switch to remote classes for five days from the 14th to the 18th.
In this regard, the Jeju Provincial Office of Education has decided to suspend in-person classes and switch to remote learning from the 14th to the 16th for seven kindergartens and six elementary schools located in Daejeong-eup and Andeok-myeon of Seogwipo City.

Meanwhile, with these new confirmed cases, a total of 31 COVID-19 cases have already been reported in the Jeju area as of the 13th of December. Notably, 29 cases occurred in the past week (December 7?13), resulting in an average of 4.1 new cases per day, marking the highest daily average since the COVID-19 outbreak began.
