"Divided Opinions on Jeju 2nd Airport Construction... Depends on Resident Support and Opposition Survey"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Park Chang-won] A public opinion survey will be conducted to gather the opinions of Jeju residents regarding the construction of Jeju Second Airport.
Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong and Jeju Provincial Council Chairman Jwa Nam-su announced the "Agreement on Gathering Residents' Opinions on the Second Airport" at the provincial government press room on the 11th.
At this event, they also revealed the agreement details on the public opinion survey, including completing the survey by January 11 of next year.
The survey will be conducted by dividing the target groups into ▲all residents and ▲Seongsan-eup residents.
The sample size is approximately 2,000 residents including those from Seongsan-eup, and about 500 residents from Seongsan-eup specifically.
The questionnaire consists of a total of four questions: three statistical questions asking about gender, age, and residential area, and one choice question asking for 'support or opposition' opinions.
The choice question asks, "What is your opinion on the construction of Jeju Second Airport, which the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to promote in the Seongsan-eup area?"
Respondents must select one of two options: support or oppose.
The survey will be conducted with a ratio of 20% landline and 80% mobile calls, and two companies will conduct each survey.
The results collected this time will be submitted to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The provincial government and the provincial council will form a joint committee for fair management, recommending two members each from their respective institutions to the committee.
Previously, in November 2015, the Ministry of Land announced plans to maintain the existing airport and build a second airport in Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo.
However, controversies arose regarding the possibility of using a military airport, site feasibility, and the Ministry's inadequate strategic environmental impact assessment, intensifying the local conflict between supporters and opponents.
Subsequently, the provincial government and the provincial council held a forum in September to resolve the Second Airport conflict and agreed on the necessity of gathering residents' opinions.
The Provincial Council's Special Committee on Resolving the Second Airport Conflict proposed conducting a public opinion survey last month, and after consultations with the provincial government, an agreement was reached in just over a month.
