Samjin Food (CEO Hwang Chang-hwan) announced on the 10th that its fish cake brand, Samjin Fish Cake, recorded sales of 100,000 packs within a month of launching the "Our Family's Meticulous Fish Cake" in October.
This product was developed by CEO Hwang Chang-hwan, who took office in March, as a new growth engine for the fish cake market.
The first product introduced, "Our Family's Meticulous Fish Cake," is a "smart food" that incorporates a nutritional component design system to reduce sodium and enhance protein content. It is evaluated as a product that meets all the recent global processed meat market trends of "low sodium," "low sugar," and "premium."
Samjin Food's main product, fish cake, has global market competitiveness due to its marine protein content. As protein intake centered on meat has raised health and environmental concerns, interest and consumption of alternative protein foods have increased. Recently, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Busan City have also shown interest in fish cake as a next-generation export item.
Samjin Food participated in the 2019 sodium reduction project led by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and succeeded in developing sodium reduction technology for fish cake. They lowered sodium content using a sodium substitute (SFL CC Standard) and enhanced flavor with bread yeast extract (MultiromeTM Powder).
Building on this, "Our Family's Meticulous Fish Cake" is pioneering a new market for "low-sodium fish cake."
The sodium content of "Our Family's Meticulous Fish Cake" is 500mg per 100g, which is more than 35% lower than the average sodium content (787.7mg) of currently marketed cooked fish cake brands. Fat, saturated fat, and trans fat are also reduced to less than 3g, 1.5g, and 0.5g per 100g, respectively.
It is a 3-free additive product that does not contain steviol glycosides (artificial sweeteners), L-ascorbic acid sodium (antioxidants), or synthetic flavorings, thereby enhancing health functionality.
"Our Family's Meticulous Fish Cake" consists of an 8-item series including assorted fish cake, square fish cake, and rolled fish cake. All products in this series contain more than 11g of protein per 100g. This meets about 20% of the recommended daily protein intake for adults and is comparable to the protein level obtained from consuming two eggs or 60g of chicken breast.
Samjin Food CEO Hwang Chang-hwan said, "I believe this is the official first step toward creating a food culture based on marine protein," and added, "We ask for much interest in the various new products developed using marine protein."
Samjin Food is also putting effort into pioneering the global market based on these products. The MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), a global eco-friendly certification mark, is an example. In January 2018, Samjin Food became the first fish cake company to obtain the MSC certification from the Marine Stewardship Council.
