Gwangju National Assembly Members "Urge Amendment of the Corruption Investigation Office Act and Resignation of Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] On the 7th, Gwangju Metropolitan City members of the National Assembly Min Hyung-bae, Song Gap-seok, Yang Hyang-ja, Yoon Young-duk, Lee Byung-hoon, Lee Yong-bin, Lee Hyung-seok, and Jo Oh-seop issued an emergency statement urging the amendment of the Public Officials Corruption Investigation Unit Act and the resignation of Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol.
They stated, "The resistance of Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol and the political prosecution against prosecutorial reform is reaching its peak," and claimed, "The Yoon Seok-yeol faction, which has privatized the prosecution, is using all means to shake the nation."
They continued, "They are siding with the entrenched corrupt powers to engage in collective defiance and are attacking the candlelight democracy that brought about the Moon Jae-in administration," emphasizing, "The citizens of Gwangju are asking why the Democratic Party hesitates to pursue prosecutorial reform in the face of the all-powerful prosecutorial authority. Democratic Party members of the National Assembly are questioning why those appointed by the president are merely watching as they defy the president."
Furthermore, they said, "We, the Gwangju members of the National Assembly, can no longer stand by the prosecution's rampage beyond democratic control and cannot delay the launch of the Public Officials Corruption Investigation Unit any longer," adding, "We cannot just watch the mandate from citizens to tirelessly complete the reform tasks of the Moon Jae-in administration, including prosecutorial reform."
They added, "The closing of the regular National Assembly session is just two days away. While the People Power Party is stalling under the pretext of seeking agreement, the Democratic Party will steadfastly pass the amendment to the Public Officials Corruption Investigation Unit Act on the 9th."
