Kang Jaeheon, Yeosu City Council Member, "Policies Needed to Preserve the Coastline"
Urging Efforts to Improve Scenery Including Removal of Illegal Coastal Buildings
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] There has been a call for policies that preserve the coastline during various permit review processes for the future development of Yeosu.
According to the Yeosu City Council (Chairman Jeon Chang-gon), Councilor Kang Jae-heon stated on the 30th of last month, "Yeosu's tourism starts from the sea, and one can feel the taste and charm of Yeosu while looking at the coastline."
On that day, Councilor Kang Jae-heon raised questions regarding measures to handle illegal buildings along the coast, the coastal maintenance of Soho 2 District, and the expansion of the city hall annex.
Regarding illegal buildings along the coast, he urged, "Illegal temporary structures have been lined up along the coastline for decades, going against the flow of the times," emphasizing the need to identify causes, unify the responsible departments, and hold public discussions for facility cleanup.
The coastal maintenance project for Soho 2 District, which plans to invest 11 billion KRW by 2024 to build a 1,600m coastal promenade, was described as "an appropriate response linked to the development of Soje District," and he requested, "The planned Second Dongdong Bridge should be designed and constructed to establish itself as a representative tourist attraction of the Yeocheon area."
Regarding the expansion of the city hall annex and the revitalization of Yeomun District, he stated, "I believe that policies to revitalize the local commercial district are the solution," and added, "Related facilities should be attracted with a focus on culture and youth centered around Yeomun Cultural Street, and various programs should be introduced."
Mayor Kwon Oh-bong of Yeosu responded first to the issue of illegal buildings along the coast, saying, "In the short term, we will clean up the messy parts, and in the long term, we will explore with fishermen ways to collectivize aquaculture itself."
He continued, "Housing development plans for Soje District will be actively promoted starting at the end of this year," and added, "We will ensure that the Second Dongdong Bridge harmonizes with the residential complex and becomes a landmark."
Regarding the question about the annex expansion, he said, "The reason for the proposal is to allow citizens to handle civil complaints quickly in one place," and added, "Balanced development can be achieved through various regional revitalization policies proposed by the city."
