Highly Pathogenic AI Outbreak at Duck Farm in Yeongam, Jeonnam... First in 3 Years Since 2017
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] A highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) case has been confirmed at a meat duck farm in Sijong-myeon, Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do. This is the first occurrence of highly pathogenic AI in the Jeonnam region in three years since December 2017.
On the 5th, Jeonnam Province announced that samples taken from the suspected highly pathogenic AI case reported at the Yeongam meat duck farm were confirmed to be H5N8 highly pathogenic AI after detailed testing.
This is the third case of highly pathogenic AI at poultry farms this year, following last month’s case at a meat duck farm in Jeongeup, Jeonbuk, and earlier this month at a laying hen farm in Sangju, Gyeongbuk. Quarantine authorities have restricted access to the affected farm and culled 9,800 ducks. Additionally, 493,000 birds at 10 farms within a 3 km radius will be preemptively culled.
