600 Horsepower and 3.5-Second 0-100 km/h... Hyundai Accelerates Development of High-Performance Electric Cars
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Hyundai Motor Group is accelerating the development of high-performance electric vehicles based on the recently unveiled dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP. This platform can deliver a maximum output of 600 horsepower, achieve 0-100 km/h acceleration (zero to sixty) in under 3.5 seconds, and reach a top speed of 260 km/h.
On the 2nd, Albert Biermann, President of Hyundai Motor Group's Research and Development Division, cited the greatest strength of the dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP as its capability to develop high-output, high-performance electric vehicles. President Biermann stated, "Through this platform, we can realize high-performance electric vehicles with up to 600 horsepower," adding, "(Hyundai Kia Motors) will implement the fastest electric vehicles through this new platform."
Additionally, E-GMP introduces the concepts of modularization and standardization, enabling the production of various types of electric vehicles on a single platform. With increased parts commonality and the elimination of complex processes, it means that multiple new electric vehicle models can be launched within a short period.
Moreover, the development of high-performance electric vehicles is being pursued especially for consumers who desire rapid acceleration and dynamic ride quality. Hyundai Kia Motors officials explained that applying this platform makes it possible to realize high-performance electric vehicles with zero to sixty acceleration under 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 260 km/h.
President Biermann said, "The electric vehicles previously introduced by Hyundai Motor Group have been recognized for their excellent efficiency," and added, "Through the world-class dedicated electric vehicle platform E-GMP, we will further expand our technological leadership to new vehicle segments that require dynamic driving performance in addition to the existing superior efficiency."
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group unveiled the high-performance electric vehicle 'RM20e,' jointly developed with Croatian high-performance electric vehicle manufacturer Rimac Automobili, for the first time in the world at the Beijing International Motor Show last September. The RM20e is equipped with a dedicated motor delivering a maximum output of 810 horsepower and maximum torque of 97.9 kg·m, producing powerful driving performance with zero to sixty acceleration under 3 seconds. Additionally, the motor is positioned in the center of the vehicle body, and a rear-wheel-drive system is adopted to ensure explosive power is effectively transmitted to the wheels.
Hyundai Motor Group has continued advanced research on dedicated electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles based on a strategic partnership with Rimac Automobili established last year. This vehicle was developed based on high-performance vehicle technology gained from motorsports and applies the 'RM20e' platform specialized for high-performance electric vehicles. Hyundai Motor Group plans to apply the high-performance electric vehicle platform developed through the RM series to various eco-friendly vehicles such as hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
