[Golf Topic] Sorensdam "To Become President of the International Golf Federation~"
[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] ○…'The Legend of Women's Golf,' Annika Sorenstam (Sweden, photo), has become the head of the International Golf Federation (IGF).
On the 4th (Korean time), IGF held a non-face-to-face board meeting and appointed Sorenstam as the new president. Her term will begin on January 1st next year and last for two years. Sorenstam expressed, "I am grateful to Peter Dawson (Scotland), who led the IGF for 10 years," and said, "It is an honor to succeed him. I will cooperate with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and various golf-related organizations to make golf a globally popular sport."
President Dawson led the IGF for 10 years from 2010 and worked to have golf adopted as an official sport at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Sorenstam is a player who won 72 victories on the U.S. Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, ranking third all-time in wins. She won 10 major championships and was inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame. When the world rankings were established in 2006, she became the inaugural number one and held the top spot for 1 year and 2 months until April 2007, retiring in 2008.

The IGF oversees golf tournaments at the Olympics, Paralympics, Youth Olympics, and hosts events such as the World Amateur Team Championships. It was approved to join the Olympic Golf Committee in 2008. The board consists of representatives from the United States Golf Association (USGA), The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A), the PGA Tour, the European Tour, the LPGA Tour, and the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA). There are 146 national golf associations as members. The Korea Golf Association also joined in 1968.
