First Lady Melania, who selected this year's decorations, said, "Over the past four years, I have had the opportunity to experience the most beautiful regions of America and patriotic Americans," adding, "I was inspired by the traditions, values, and history shared by the American people."
Traditionally, the First Lady has been responsible for creating the Christmas tree decorations at the White House.
Foreign media attributed special significance to the inclusion of decorations depicting emergency rooms and hospital models this year. This is interpreted as a gesture of gratitude toward medical personnel fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the White House East Wing, trees decorated with yellow lights and other ornaments were installed.
The official dining room, the State Dining Room, and the Rose Garden featured oversized donuts, gum, and chocolates. The Associated Press reported that notes with words such as peace, love, faith, and joy were also visible.
The Christmas tree installed in the library was decorated with photos of women’s rights activists who have been pioneers in women's political participation. This was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
