Songpa-gu Shares Recycled Abandoned Bicycles with Neighbors
Expanding Safe Transportation Options in the Untact Era to Enhance Both Environment and Urban Aesthetics
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) will collect and refurbish abandoned bicycles and donate 100 recycled bicycles to local elementary, middle, and high schools in December.
The district donates about 170 recycled bicycles annually to low-income residents. This is the result of collecting and recycling more than 2,000 abandoned bicycles that were left unattended throughout the city, causing urban aesthetic and safety issues as well as obstructing pedestrian traffic.
This year, the district conducted focused inspections on bicycle racks along roads and subway stations with heavy foot traffic such as Jamsil Station and Jangji Station. After issuing warnings for 5,151 abandoned bicycles, 2,483 bicycles that were not voluntarily retrieved were collected. Among these, bicycles in good condition were selected, repaired, and 70 recycled bicycles were donated to low-income residents in the first half of this year.
Songpa-gu, which achieved the highest collection record among Seoul's autonomous districts this year, plans to continue actively managing abandoned bicycles. After attaching warning stickers to abandoned bicycles, if they are not moved for more than 10 days, the district collects them and, following a 14-day disposal notice, recycles some to donate to neighbors.
In particular, Songpa-gu is implementing various policies to meet the increasing demand for bicycles, which have gained attention as a safe mode of transportation during the COVID-19 era. These include intensive crackdowns on abandoned bicycles, increasing public transportation share through the distribution of recycled bicycles, and maintaining bicycle road environments including the Songpa Dullegil trail, taking care of the environment, urban aesthetics, and residents' health.
