Using the rest period after the winter flood prevention work is completed, they have embarked on a special talent donation activity to help vulnerable local residents have a safe and warm winter.
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) announced that until February 26 next year, it will provide a ‘Safety Welfare Service’ that repairs local welfare facilities and the homes of neighbors in need by utilizing the professional technical skills of rainwater pump station workers.
In the mornings, the rainwater pump station staff focus on their primary duties such as maintaining and inspecting flood prevention facilities and managing detention basin facilities. In the afternoons, they visit vulnerable neighbors such as elderly living alone, senior centers, daycare centers, and disabled households to improve their living environments by applying their specialized skills as a form of talent donation.
Yeongdeungpo-gu operates a total of eight rainwater pump stations, staffed by 17 skilled technicians holding certifications such as engineer, industrial engineer, and technician in the fields of electricity and machinery.
Most of the staff are professional technicians with extensive work experience in their respective fields. Using their own inspection equipment and technical expertise, they provide free inspections and repairs of heating, electrical, sanitation, and plumbing facilities for socially marginalized households in the area.
The technicians carefully inspect and repair various living inconveniences related to housing, including relatively simple repairs such as replacing lighting fixtures, checking boiler operation status and fuel leaks that are difficult for ordinary citizens to maintain, inspecting heating pipe leaks, checking the operation status and appropriate capacity usage of circuit breakers, inspecting and repairing outlets, plugs, and wiring, as well as repairing sanitation and water supply facilities.
If any lighting, outlets, wiring, or water valves found to be malfunctioning or deteriorated during inspections can be repaired on-site, they are immediately fixed. They also conduct safety inspections of electrical facilities to prevent safety accidents such as fires and electric shocks. Households requiring additional inspections due to serious defects are notified separately.
The district began recruiting households eligible for the Safety Welfare Service in October and identified a total of 89 vulnerable households and welfare facilities in urgent need of repairs within the area.
Accordingly, since the 25th, the district has divided the 18 administrative neighborhoods into two zones and formed four teams to carry out repairs.
In addition, in accordance with the strengthened Level 2 social distancing measures, inspections are conducted thoroughly with mandatory mask-wearing and adherence to personal hygiene rules.
The talent donation ‘Safety Welfare Service’ has been conducted annually without interruption since 2000, considering the needs of elderly living alone, senior centers, and daycare centers requesting repairs. Last year, a total of 71 households were repaired, preventing safety accidents in advance and receiving great support from local residents through this special sharing of professional skills.
