Pohang City to Remove Haksancheon Covered Road... "Creating Waterfront Space with 39.4 Billion Won Investment"
Restored After 28 Years ... Completed in June 2023
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] On the afternoon of the 24th, Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Haksancheon Ecological Stream Restoration Project at the Haksancheon site, attended by Mayor Lee Kang-deok and city and provincial council members.
Since 2017, the city has been conducting a 'Feasibility Study and Basic Plan for Urban Stream Ecological Restoration Project' along with investigations into traffic volume and ecosystem conditions to restore four streams: Yanghakcheon, Chilseongcheon, Duhocheon, and Haksancheon.
The pilot project, the Haksancheon restoration, is a project to transform an approximately 900-meter section that has been covered and used as a road and parking lot for over 20 years since the 1990s into a nature-friendly waterfront space. A total of 39.4 billion KRW will be invested, including 18.2 billion KRW from the national government, 6.4 billion KRW from the provincial government, and 14.8 billion KRW from the city.
Pohang City plans to demolish the 23-meter-wide covering frame and restore the area as an ecological stream. Walking trails, ecological experience spaces, and aquatic plants for water purification will be planted. In particular, by linking with the Greenway Urban Forest (in the Uhyun-dong area) and the Jungang-dong Urban New Deal Project (former Suhyup warehouse and Dongbin Inner Harbor), it is expected to become a premium waterfront space connecting land and sea.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang said, "Since the Haksancheon restoration section is located in a geographically and ecologically important area connecting Uhyun Urban Forest and Dongbin Inner Harbor, this project is expected not only to improve the quality of life for citizens but also to revitalize the local commercial district through urban environment improvement."
He added, "Haksancheon will serve as an indicator for the future direction of the Yanghakcheon, Chilseongcheon, and Duhocheon restoration projects, and through future operational monitoring, the remaining urban streams will be restored step by step."

Meanwhile, Pohang City will also promote the Haksan District Urban Flood Prevention Project with an additional investment of 34 billion KRW. The area around Joeun Sunrin Hospital, a frequent urban flood zone, will be designated as the Haksan drainage area, and existing stormwater pipes will be maintained and a pumping station installed over a total area of 4 km.
