Georgia Certifies Biden's Victory... Vice President Pence Heads to Senate Election Support
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The state of Georgia in the United States officially certified the victory of President-elect Joe Biden after a manual recount. Vice President Mike Pence campaigned in support of the Senate runoff election held in Georgia, expressing the Republican Party's determination to maintain its majority status in the Senate.
According to the Associated Press, Brad Raffensperger, Georgia's Secretary of State, certified the election results on the 20th (local time), confirming that President-elect Biden led President Donald Trump by 12,670 votes (0.25 percentage points) in Georgia.
The New York Times (NYT) evaluated that Georgia's certification of Biden's victory dealt a blow to President Trump, who had vowed to overturn the results in battleground states through legal battles.
Secretary Raffensperger caused a stir by first certifying Biden's victory in the afternoon, then suddenly withdrawing the certification citing incomplete procedures, only to reissue the certification about three and a half hours later.
President-elect Biden secured a total of 306 electoral votes, including 16 from Georgia, surpassing the 270 votes needed for victory.
Georgia announced the results of the manual recount completed the previous day, showing that President-elect Biden led President Donald Trump by about 12,000 votes.
Georgia, traditionally a Republican stronghold, handed a decisive blow to President Trump by supporting President-elect Biden in this election.
Separately from the presidential election results, Vice President Mike Pence campaigned in Georgia on the same day to support the Republican candidates' victory in the Senate runoff election scheduled for January next year.
Georgia will decide two senators in this runoff election. If the Democratic Party wins both seats, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris can use her casting vote to secure the majority status in the Senate.
Conversely, if the Republican Party loses both seats, it will lose its majority status in the Senate and may lose policy leadership to the Democrats.
