Seoul Reports 132 New COVID-19 Cases Yesterday... Cumulative Total Surpasses Daegu at 7,236 (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Seoul has surged daily, surpassing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Daegu, which experienced the first major outbreak in February and March.
As of midnight on the 20th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in Seoul increased by 132 compared to the previous day. This is the highest number in 84 days since August 27, when 146 cases were reported due to the influence of the Sarang Jeil Church and the Gwanghwamun rallies.
The number of confirmed cases in Seoul has been rising again this month, recording 74 on the 12th, 85 on the 14th, 90 on the 16th, and 92 on the 17th. Two days ago, on the 18th, the number reached triple digits at 109, and on the 19th, it surged to 132.
The cumulative number of confirmed cases increased to 7,236, surpassing Daegu's 7,211, making it the highest among the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces nationwide. Daegu, which had the highest cumulative confirmed cases for over half a year following the large-scale outbreak caused by the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, reported only one new case the previous day.
Among the new confirmed cases on this day, 127 were infected within the local community, excluding 5 cases imported from overseas. The infection routes include 12 cases at a sauna in an apartment in Seocho-gu (cumulative 30), 8 cases related to a family in Nowon-gu (cumulative 24), 7 cases at a high school in Dongdaemun-gu (cumulative 9), 4 cases at Cheongryeonsa Temple in Dobong-gu (cumulative 22), 4 cases at a daycare center in Seocho-gu (cumulative 8), 3 cases from an alumni sports gathering (cumulative 8), 2 cases at Ace Hope Care Center in Dongdaemun-gu (cumulative 69), and 2 cases at a hospital in Gangseo-gu (cumulative 12).
Additionally, one new confirmed case each was added to existing cluster infections at a nursing facility in Seodaemun-gu (cumulative 16), among Yonsei University students (cumulative 10), related to sports facilities in Jungnang-gu (cumulative 10), and related to a securities company in Yeongdeungpo-gu (cumulative 11).
Other cases included 4 contacts with confirmed cases from other cities and provinces, 46 cases with other infection routes, and 5 imported cases from overseas. There are 26 cases still under investigation for their infection routes.
The number of COVID-19 related deaths in Seoul increased by one to 84. So far, 6,109 patients have been declared recovered and discharged, and 1,043 confirmed patients are currently undergoing isolation treatment.
