[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] “Shouldn't the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission come to the site where the monumental task of nuclear power plant dismantling is underway, in the world's largest nuclear power plant cluster area?”
On the 20th, Gijang-gun, Busan, sent a formal letter urging the relocation of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) to Gijang-gun to the Blue House, the Prime Minister's Office, the National Assembly, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and the NSSC.
Due to signs of a resurgence of COVID-19, instead of visiting related ministries in person, Gijang-gun officials including the county governor chose to deliver the letter officially.
The letter emphasized that Gijang-gun, including nearby areas, is the world's largest nuclear power plant cluster with 10 nuclear power plants from construction, operation to dismantling, and is the site where the dismantling process of Korea's first permanently shut down nuclear power plant, Kori Unit 1, is underway.
It also pointed out that the area around Kori Nuclear Power Plant is the largest densely populated region with 8 million residents in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, and argued that relocating the NSSC, the agency responsible for nuclear safety, to Gijang-gun is the most appropriate.
The NSSC, which decides major nuclear power policies and is responsible for radiation disaster prevention in case of nuclear accidents, is emphasized as suitable to relocate to the nuclear power plant city from the perspectives of local residents' safety, radiation disaster prevention, and public acceptance, as well as for decentralization and balanced regional development.
Oh Gyu-seok, governor of Gijang-gun, said, “The central government must roll up its sleeves immediately and relocate the NSSC from Gwanghwamun, Seoul, to the site where nuclear power plants are located as soon as possible. That is the reason for the NSSC's existence and basis for its establishment. It is also an urgent task for the safety of nuclear power plants and residents around them. I urge this once again with a desperate heart.”
In response to news that the government is considering relocating the NSSC to Sejong City or Daejeon City, Gijang-gun formed and is operating a task force team on the 11th to prepare measures for relocating the NSSC to Gijang.
