Hanwha Defense 3 Companies Showcase 'Next-Generation Advanced Weapon Systems'
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Three defense affiliates of Hanwha Group, including Hanwha Corporation, Hanwha Systems, and Hanwha Defense, will participate in the 'Defense Expo Korea (DX Korea 2020)' held from the 18th to the 20th.
At this exhibition, Hanwha's defense affiliates will set up the largest integrated exhibition hall among participating companies and showcase a large number of future weapon systems incorporating Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), drones, and robots.
Hanwha Corporation will present laser weapon systems and navigation devices, considered 'game changers' on the future battlefield, as their main products. The laser anti-aircraft weapon, known as the 'Korean-style Star Wars technology,' is a new concept weapon system that can neutralize small unmanned aerial vehicles such as drones and multicopters using a laser light source. Along with this, a 'laser explosive ordnance disposal system' that uses high-energy lasers to quickly and safely remove improvised explosive devices and unexploded ordnance will also be exhibited.
Hanwha Corporation will introduce gyro sensors, the core technology of navigation devices, based on over 30 years of accumulated technological expertise. They will also showcase 'anti-jamming' technology that prevents navigation devices from being disabled by enemy electronic interference on the battlefield. They have already succeeded in domestic production of guided weapon systems and vehicle-mounted anti-jamming devices and plan to apply this technology to export-oriented weapon systems in the future.
Hanwha Systems will present a blueprint for the future defense industry based on Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies emphasizing 'hyper-connectivity and hyper-intelligence.' The 'Micro-SAR Satellite Zone' in the exhibition hall will display the first domestically developed micro military reconnaissance satellite. With low development costs, a large number of satellites can be secured, minimizing the imaging cycle of areas of interest and enabling near real-time surveillance.
In the 'Defense UAM Zone,' the military model of the electric-powered distributed vertical takeoff and landing aircraft 'Butterfly,' jointly developed by Hanwha Systems and the U.S. company Overair, will be unveiled for the first time. The Butterfly, equipped with low-noise and high-efficiency technology, is expected to enhance military mobility and enable multi-mission operations when applied in the defense sector.
Hanwha Defense will prominently feature customized unmanned systems and defense robots that respond to future battlefield environments such as troop reductions and the 'untact' trend. The multipurpose unmanned vehicle developed through the nation's first civilian-military cooperation project (2016?2019) will be exhibited in person. This multipurpose unmanned vehicle undertakes supply transport, casualty evacuation, and combat support missions in battlefields or hazardous areas instead of soldiers.
Hanwha Defense will also reveal its remote-controlled weapon system (RCWS), boasting unparalleled technological prowess. The RCWS is a weapon system operated remotely from ships or vehicles, significantly enhancing the survivability of friendly crew members during combat on the battlefield.
