[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Chinese President Xi Jinping condemned the United States' interference in internal affairs and unilateralism during the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit held via video conference.
He also expressed willingness to support BRICS member countries with vaccines being developed by China if they desire.
According to Xinhua News Agency on the 18th, President Xi stated at the meeting attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, "The United States is disregarding rules and laws and engaging in unilateralism," adding, "Such actions trample on the legitimate rights and dignity of all countries."
He also pointed out that "withdrawing from multilateral organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and unilaterally violating agreements among various countries run counter to the universal wishes of people worldwide."
President Xi emphasized the need for joint response to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
He said, "Humanity is experiencing the worst epidemic and suffering the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s," adding, "We must practice the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind and strive to create a better world."
He argued, "To overcome the epidemic, international joint prevention and control must be strengthened, and support should be given to enable the WHO to exercise core leadership." He also mentioned that China is actively considering providing vaccines to BRICS countries, stating, "We must transform differences into unity and eliminate prejudice with reason to maximize synergy."
At the meeting, President Xi also emphasized openness and innovation for the recovery of the global economy.
He said, "We must prevent the epidemic with one hand and stabilize the economy with the other," adding, "We will build an innovation base for partnership with BRICS in Xiamen City, Fujian Province, China."
