Seoul City Explores the Potential of 'Hanok' as Future Architecture Through Exhibition
[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] To mark 20 years of Hanok preservation and promotion, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will share its achievements and hold "Seoul Hanok, Future Asset Exhibition II" both online and offline from the 19th to spread the possibilities and value of Hanok as future architecture.
This exhibition, under the concept of "Hanok evolving by generation (Generation X, Generation Y, Generation Z)," aims to convey that Hanok, which has permeated the daily lives of all generations over the past 20 years of Hanok policies and reflects the lifestyle of the times, remains a valuable and sustainable asset for the future.
The exhibition is divided into five parts: ① Intro ② Beginning of Hanok ③ Growth of Hanok ④ Extension of Hanok ⑤ Projection Hall.
Additionally, as a side event, the "Seoul Excellent Hanok Photo Exhibition" will be held at Bukchon Hanokcheong located in Gye-dong, Jongno-gu, and the "20th Anniversary Retrospective of Seoul Hanok Policy" will also be distributed.
Moreover, the citizen participation program offers an experience where visitors can create their own ‘Dangho’?a personalized house name imbued with their philosophy?and messages on prepared postcards. After the exhibition ends, 10 people will be selected by lottery to receive commemorative nameplates engraved with their Dangho as souvenirs.
Meanwhile, to foster public empathy regarding the future value and utility of Seoul Hanok, a citizen forum titled "Changes and Future-Oriented Values of Seoul Hanok" will also be held.
The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. without any holidays and is free of charge. In accordance with the COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, the exhibition will operate with time-slot-based limited viewing.
Ryu Hoon, Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Urban Regeneration Office, stated, “While existing Hanok were subjects of preservation, going forward, they will grow and change further by adding regeneration and creative utilization as urban-based content, creating economic, cultural, and social value.”
