The Special Travel Advisory is issued in cases of urgent short-term risks according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' directive 'Travel Alert System Operation Guidelines.' It is issued as a measure equivalent to travel alert levels 2 to 3 and is valid for up to 90 days from the date of issuance, usually issued in one-month increments.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' extension of the Special Travel Advisory is in consideration of the World Health Organization (WHO)'s declaration of a global pandemic and the continued worldwide spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), as well as the ongoing situation where many countries have imposed entry bans or restrictions on travelers from all countries and suspended flight operations.
Additionally, the Ministry considered the necessity of Korean nationals refraining from overseas travel to prevent COVID-19 infections during travel and to support domestic quarantine efforts.
