Suncheon and Gwangyang Prepare to Raise Social Distancing Levels
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] COVID-19 infections are spreading in Suncheon, Gwangyang, and Yeosu, which share the same living area, raising expectations for an additional escalation of social distancing measures.
Despite the upgrade to social distancing level 1.5 in Suncheon and Gwangyang, the spread of COVID-19 infections is actually increasing, leading to prospects of further social distancing escalation.
According to health authorities on the 16th, 11 people tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend in Suncheon and Gwangyang (5 in Suncheon, 6 in Gwangyang), and on the 16th, an additional 6 in Suncheon and 2 in Gwangyang were confirmed positive.
Suncheon Mayor Heo Seok expressed concern in an emergency briefing, stating, “We proactively raised social distancing to level 1.5 and took measures such as limiting the number of users in multi-use facilities, but the spread of infections has not subsided. Infections are actually increasing in nearby cities such as the eastern region of Jeollanam-do and Gwangju.”
He also mentioned, “There are many cases where the confirmed patients’ locations, residences, and workplaces differ, making it difficult for health authorities to trace their movements.”
Mayor Heo said, “If we fail to stop the current spread of infections, we will have no choice but to consider raising the social distancing level.” He urged citizens to cooperate with the concerns about the social distancing escalation, which would significantly restrict daily life and economic activities, and to comply with quarantine guidelines.
