[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Industry, academia, research, and government sectors are jointly preparing alternatives to help our mid-sized enterprises respond to the increased volatility in the global value chain (GVC) caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) announced on the 16th that it will hold the "2020 Mid-sized Enterprise Innovation International Conference" on the 19th at the Crystal Ballroom on the 2nd floor of Lotte Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul.

Hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy during the "2020 Mid-sized Enterprise Week" from the 16th to the 20th, this conference will be held under the theme "Reorganization of the Materials, Parts, and Equipment GVC and Response Strategies for Our Mid-sized Enterprises."

The event will include expert lectures and discussions, presentations of successful cases of global supply chain restructuring, and business consultation sessions.

In the first part, thematic lectures will analyze and present key industry-specific strategies for proactively responding to the reorganization of the materials, parts, and equipment GVC, followed by discussions among domestic and international experts from industry, academia, and research.

The second part will provide a platform for mid-sized enterprise representatives to directly present and share know-how on successful GVC restructuring. An online business-to-business (B2B) consultation session will also be held for business cooperation with leading countries in materials, parts, and equipment such as Germany, Russia, and Israel.

To support global cooperation between domestic mid-sized enterprises and German startup companies, KIAT and RWTH Aachen University in Germany are scheduled to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

Seok Young-cheol, President of KIAT, stated, "Various issues such as COVID-19, strengthened protectionism, and Japan's export regulations are accelerating the reorganization of the GVC. I hope the discussions at this event will greatly assist mid-sized enterprises in establishing their management strategies for next year."

He added, "Taking this opportunity to sign an MOU with RWTH Aachen University, which has startups, we will support technology and business exchanges and cooperation between domestic mid-sized enterprises and startups."

This event will be held both online and offline. To comply with social distancing guidelines, the number of on-site attendees is limited to fewer than 50 people. Online participation is available through prior registration.

Details of the conference program and online pre-registration can be found on the event website.
