[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Andrew McAfee, a world-renowned authority in the field of information economics who gained great attention with 'The Second Machine Age (2014),' a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, challenged conventional wisdom in his new book 'Post Peak: The Beginning of a Great Reversal.' He argued that humanity has a bright future despite concerns about climate change and resource depletion.
In 'Post Peak,' McAfee claimed that the combination of technological advancement and capitalism can save humanity's future. This contradicts our conventional belief, which has worried about a bleak future. Skepticism toward optimism that speaks of hope instead of destruction or a painful future may stem from our natural tendency to view the future pessimistically. In this regard, McAfee's perspective is novel.
It is being analyzed that we are experiencing the Anthropocene (a geological epoch distinguishing the period when humans have significantly impacted the Earth's environment) in the era of climate change. This is why urgent measures to reduce carbon emissions are being sought. Energy policy issues have now become central topics in politics and society.
Behind these concerns lies the premise that as the world population steadily increases and the economy grows, the resources and energy consumed by humanity also increase. This can lead to accelerated environmental pollution and eventually a predicted catastrophe. The goal has been set to delay the catastrophe or minimize its damage.
McAfee questioned this premise. He pointed out that material productivity has greatly improved through technological advancement, and humanity has undergone processes that improved life, such as the abolition of slavery and reduction of absolute poverty. In the case of American agriculture, 18 million hectares of farmland have returned to nature, yet crop production increased. During the same period, the absolute use of potassium, phosphate, and nitrogen decreased, yet these results occurred. Agricultural productivity improved through crop improvement even though farmland decreased and less fertilizer was used.
The author also analyzed that paper usage may have already peaked in 2013. Humanity used the most paper seven years ago, and since then, paper usage has been declining. Similarly, thanks to technological advancement, the same amount of manufactured goods can now be produced with significantly fewer resources than before.
The author identified technological advancement and capitalism as the driving forces of change. Capitalism seeks price competitiveness to reduce costs. This capitalism is leading the so-called 'post-material era.' It means reducing resource consumption by combining with technological advancement.
Moreover, the author explained that with the use of digital tools, production methods have transformed toward using fewer resources. For example, everyday items such as cameras, portable music devices, wallets, and books, which would have filled a bag in the past, are now contained in a single smartphone. The resources required to make one smartphone have also significantly decreased.
McAfee argues that the combination of technological advancement and capitalism, driven by profit-seeking, can serve as the driving force to solve humanity's pressing problems. He emphasizes that a responsive government and public awareness are also necessary. A government that can manage capitalism and guide it in a desirable direction, and citizens who can establish such a government, are needed.
Regarding the global concern of greenhouse gas issues, the author pointed out that we are not helpless. In the United States, carbon dioxide emissions have naturally decreased due to technological advancement and capitalism without artificial reductions. The author explains that similar events could occur in other countries at some point.
However, it is not easy to be optimistic about the future based solely on the hopeful light the author presents. The U.S. case in climate change may be unique to the U.S. The U.S. is a developed country, and due to the shale revolution, natural gas production increased. It is difficult to apply the U.S. case, where energy consumption shifted from coal to natural gas, to the world in general.
Even if we accept the author's claim that pollution and carbon dioxide emissions decrease as the economic structure advances, problems remain. The speed of carbon dioxide emission reduction is still slow, and carbon dioxide emissions continue in countries that have not advanced their economic structures.
Whether the Earth can endure is another matter. What can be confirmed from McAfee's argument is the possibility of change. Additionally, the claim that nuclear power is a solution to global warming does not immediately resonate.

Nevertheless, lighting a beacon of hope in a dark future like climate change is not reckless. Humanity has repeatedly advanced. As Hans Rosling and others emphasized in 'Factfulness (2018),' humanity ended the era of slavery, greatly reduced absolute poverty, and extended average life expectancy. The hope that technological advancement, capitalism, responsive governments, and public awareness can change our future should be respected like a warning against a bleak future. Relying on human wisdom to face imminent threats like global warming is an inevitable choice.
