'16-Month-Old Infant Death' Abuse Suspect Mother Faces Imprisonment Decision Tomorrow
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] The mother of a 16-month-old infant who died covered in bruises is at a crossroads regarding detention.
The Seoul Southern District Court will hold a detention hearing (pre-arrest suspect interrogation) for the deceased infant's mother, Ms. A, at 10:30 a.m. on the 11th, presided over by Judge Seong Bo-gi, who is in charge of detention warrants.
Earlier, the Yangcheon Police Station in Seoul applied for an arrest warrant for Ms. A on charges including child abuse resulting in death on the 4th, and the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office requested the arrest warrant from the court the day before.
According to the police, the deceased infant was brought to the emergency room of a hospital in Mok-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, on the 13th of last month with bruises and eventually passed away. After the infant's death, the hospital reported suspected child abuse to the police.
The National Forensic Service's autopsy revealed that the cause of death was abdominal injury caused by external force. Currently, Ms. A is reported to admit to some of the charges while denying others.
The infant was adopted by the current parents earlier this year, and from May, there were three reports suspected of child abuse over about five months, but the police reportedly closed the investigation as they found no evidence of wrongdoing.
