"Cooperation on Boryeong Dam Water Quality Management"…K-water and Korea Mine Reclamation Corporation Sign Agreement to Prevent Mining Damage
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Korea Water Resources Corporation signed a business agreement on mine damage prevention projects in the upper dam area with Korea Mine Reclamation Corporation on the 11th at the Han River Basin Headquarters of K-water located in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province.
Mine damage is an abbreviation of 'mine damage.' It refers to environmental damage caused by heavy metals and other residual minerals from mines contaminating soil and groundwater, requiring specialized management.
This agreement was prepared to reduce the inflow of discharged water from abandoned coal mines located upstream of Boryeong Multipurpose Dam in Boryeong City, Chungnam Province, into the dam, thereby ensuring water quality safety and preserving the aquatic ecosystem.
The agreement includes mutual cooperation for investigation, design, and construction for the installation of mine damage prevention facilities, research for mine damage prevention, information exchange, technology development, and education.
Through this agreement, both organizations will implement new installation and operation management projects for mine damage prevention facilities at Taehwa Coal Mine and Oseong Coal Mine upstream of Boryeong Dam. They also agreed to further cooperate on mine damage prevention projects upstream of dams when establishing the Basic Mine Damage Prevention Plan (2022?2026) in the future.
Both organizations previously signed a mutual cooperation agreement for mine damage prevention projects at Boryeong Dam and others in March 2012, and with this agreement, they plan to continue mine damage prevention projects for abandoned coal mines upstream of dams.
Boryeong Multipurpose Dam has a total storage capacity of 116.9 million cubic meters, was completed in October 1998, and currently supplies water stably to about 480,000 citizens in eight cities and counties in western Chungnam, as well as to four thermal power plants: Taean, Dangjin, Shinboryeong, and Shinseocheon.
