Twitter to Allow Deletion of Inciting and False Tweets After Trump's Departure
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Eun-byeol] When Joe Biden, who won the U.S. presidential election, officially takes office on January 20 next year, it may become difficult for President Donald Trump to express his claims through Twitter. This is because Twitter plans to revoke the 'uncensored' privilege it has provided to the sitting president as soon as Biden is inaugurated.
According to foreign media on the 8th (local time), Twitter announced that once President-elect Biden takes office, it will apply the same rules to President Trump as it does to other general users. Twitter deletes posts that incite violence or contain false information according to its regulations. However, if the user is a national leader, elected official, or election candidate, posts are not deleted for reasons of 'public interest.'
Instead, a warning message is displayed below the post, or the post is hidden so that it can only be viewed by clicking on the warning.
Under this Twitter policy, President Trump was able to share posts containing conspiracy theories such as "mail-in voting is fraud" and make the tweets publicly visible. However, if he is no longer in office, Twitter could judge such posts as false or inciting information and delete the former president's tweets.
Twitter stated, "When a sitting world leader or election candidate no longer holds office and becomes an ordinary citizen, the (uncensored) privilege will not be applied."
President Trump used Twitter as a major platform for his statements throughout his tenure. He used Twitter not only to express his views on key issues but also to announce senior government appointments.
