Assemblyman Min Hyung-bae Proposes Bill to Protect and Support Stable Work for Essential Workers
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] A bill has been proposed to protect and support essential workers so that they can work safely and stably from various risks such as infectious disease transmission and industrial accidents.
Min Hyung-bae, a member of the National Assembly (The Democratic Party of Korea, Gwangsan-gu Eul, Gwangju), announced on the 6th that he had introduced the "Act on the Protection and Support of Essential Workers" as the main proposer.
Essential workers are those who work on the front lines of public safety and daily life maintenance, such as healthcare, social welfare, care services, daily logistics delivery, and public transportation operation.
Essential workers work face-to-face on the front lines of public safety and daily life maintenance even in large-scale disaster situations like COVID-19, but their working conditions are poor compared to their roles. Many essential workers work long hours for low wages and are exposed to job insecurity.
The main contents of the bill submitted by Rep. Min in response to this situation include ▲ the Minister of Employment and Labor conducting a survey on the status of essential workers every five years ▲ establishment of an Essential Workers Support Committee and regulations on related matters ▲ creation of hygiene and safety facilities and support for quarantine supplies, employment insurance premiums, industrial accident insurance premiums, and allowances ▲ provision of counseling support for essential workers and preparation of measures to improve working conditions such as securing appropriate working hours.
