According to National Assembly members Lee Yong-bin and Min Hyung-bae on the 4th, the Emergency Countermeasures Committee for the Boundary Adjustment between Autonomous Districts of Cheomdan 1 and 2-dong in Gwangsan-gu and the Democratic Party’s Gwangsan-gu Gap and Eul Regional Committees issued a joint statement declaring “We resolutely oppose the incorporation of Gwangsan-gu Cheomdan 1 and 2-dong into Buk-gu without residents’ consent.”
In the statement, they criticized, “Gwangju City is pushing forward a boundary adjustment plan with a deadline set for the end of the year, despite the opposition from residents of Buk-gu and Gwangsan-gu that caused the plan to fail in 2018,” and added, “The adjustment plans based on the 2017 population data are shortsighted, unable to foresee even a step ahead; they are patchwork, hasty plans without principles or standards, and merely token measures that do not reflect the local realities.”
They also emphasized, “Some claim that the moderate adjustment plan is the most reasonable, but the moderate adjustment plan is just a hasty plan that maintains Buk-gu, which has the largest population, as is, while reducing Gwangsan-gu,” and stated, “We can never agree to the large and moderate adjustment plans, which are token, hasty reorganization plans.”
They urged the preparation of a long-term and fundamental boundary adjustment plan, emphasizing that it should be based on public discussion that fully reflects the residents’ will.
If boundary adjustment is absolutely necessary, they expressed support for a ‘small-scale revision plan’ that minimizes conflicts and suggested considering a new alternative to establish a ‘(tentative name) Cheomdan-gu’ by combining Cheomdan 1, 2, and 3 districts.
