Everland, Korea's First Baby Panda Named 'Pubao'
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Everland, operated by Samsung C&T Resort Division, announced on the 4th that the name of the first baby panda born in Korea has been decided as 'Pubao.'
The final name selected through a voting event held for general customers from September 22 to October 11 was 'Pubao (福寶)'.
Meaning 'a treasure that brings happiness,' Pubao was chosen as the final name after about 50,000 customers participated in the online and offline voting events on the Everland website, official social network service (SNS) channels, and Panda World site, giving it the highest number of votes.
Typically, pandas are born as premature infants weighing less than 200g, with a very low initial survival rate, so it is an international custom to give them a Chinese name around 100 days after birth when their health stabilizes.
Everland explained that, through prior consultation with related organizations, they selected four candidate names with good meanings and named the baby panda by allowing customers to vote among them.
Pubao, the first baby panda born in Korea last July, has grown significantly over the past 100 days. At birth, weighing only 197g?about 1/600th of the mother's weight?and measuring 16.5cm in length, Pubao now weighs 5.8kg and measures 58.5cm in length, growing approximately 30 times and 3.6 times respectively after 100 days.
Pubao's mother, Aibao, is mostly raising him naturally, but a dedicated team of veterinarians and keepers regularly separates the baby briefly from the mother to conduct health checkups to monitor Pubao's development.
Additionally, from about two weeks after birth, when growth is concentrated, Pubao is given nutritional supplements, and to allow the mother postpartum rest, the assigned keeper has acted as a childcare helper, caring for Pubao for three hours daily.
Keeper Gang Cheolwon, in charge of the pandas, said, "I am truly grateful to both Pubao, who has grown healthily over the past 100 days, and Aibao, who has raised him well," and asked Everland customers, "Please show much interest and support as the baby panda grows up walking on all fours and eating bamboo."
Everland Zoo plans to consider a public unveiling as early as this year after Pubao grows enough to walk independently and goes through the process of adapting to the external environment.
Meanwhile, Everland announced that it will hold a special event called 'Find the Panda' until the end of November to celebrate Pubao's 100 days.
First, at the main gate Global Fair area leading to Panda World, a new 'Panda, Let's Play' baby panda character photo zone was created in collaboration with global leisure platform company Yanolja and professional artist Nojun.
