70% Parent Satisfaction Achieved in Yeongdeungpo-gu Safe School Commute Improvement
High Satisfaction with Floor Traffic Lights and Regulatory Enforcement CCTV... Installation to be Completed by This Month
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) has been focusing on creating safe school routes within child protection zones since last year, resulting in a high satisfaction rate of 70% from parents regarding the establishment of these routes.
The district conducted a parent satisfaction survey on the safe school route project from September 24 to October 20, lasting about a month. The results showed 24.3% of respondents were very satisfied and 45.5% satisfied, totaling nearly 70% satisfaction.
Among the detailed projects, the installation of ground traffic lights (38%) and regulatory CCTV installation (25%) were identified as the most satisfying, indicating positive evaluations of the improvement efforts.
Based on a comprehensive survey conducted at each school since the first half of this year and feedback from parent meetings, the district established an action plan and began improvement works.
Accordingly, the district focused on enhancing safety by completing ▲installation of ground traffic lights (at 17 elementary schools including Dangsan Elementary) ▲sidewalk installation (at 6 elementary schools including Daedong Elementary) ▲color pedestrian paths installation (at 5 elementary schools including Dangsan Elementary) ▲diagonal crosswalk installation (at 2 elementary schools including Yoonjung Elementary) ▲and installation of central dividers and safety fences.
In June this year, in relation to the enforcement of the ‘Min-sik Law,’ a full inspection was conducted on 66 protection zone facilities. By July, construction design and police consultations were completed, and road markings and 282 signs were maintained across 226 zones at the start and end points of protection zones to enhance driver visibility.
Additionally, the district designated absolute no-parking zones at 23 elementary schools in the area and completed the abolition of protection zones and maintenance of related facilities following the closure of five daycare centers, including Daerim Daycare Center.
Furthermore, the district plans to complete the installation of pedestrian crossing traffic lights in front of seven elementary schools, including Yeongnim Elementary, by the end of December this year. A total of 21 regulatory enforcement CCTVs will be installed by November along the main school routes of 21 elementary schools, including Dangseo Elementary.
Notably, in August this year, a pilot project was carried out at Yeongsin Elementary School to create a safe walking environment for students by installing ▲ground traffic lights ▲voice guidance systems ▲and regulatory enforcement CCTVs all in front of the school gate, receiving great responses from parents and pedestrians.
Also, in November, the district plans to implement a ‘time-limited car-free street’ from the back gate of Daegil Elementary School for 68 meters during the main school hours of 8:20 to 9:00 AM. Improvement works aiming for completion within the year will continue, including implementing one-way traffic and securing pedestrian paths on the downhill sidewalk of Singil-ro 42-gil, known as the most dangerous section of the Usin Elementary School route.
