Choi In-ho, the senior spokesperson for the Democratic Party, released a statement that day, saying, "(Deputy Prime Minister Hong's resignation) is understood as an expression of responsibility stemming from his steadfast commitment to the major shareholder criteria for capital gains tax on stock transfers."
Senior Spokesperson Choi added, "Going forward, the Democratic Party will work together with Deputy Prime Minister Hong Nam-ki to achieve economic recovery and the success of the K-New Deal."
Earlier that day, at the National Assembly's Planning and Finance Committee plenary session, Deputy Prime Minister Hong said, "Regarding the criteria for imposing capital gains tax on stock transfers, after two months of ongoing debate, I thought someone needed to take a responsible stance," and added, "I submitted my resignation along with my letter of resignation."
The criteria for imposing capital gains tax on stock transfers was finally decided through a high-level meeting between the ruling party, government, and the Blue House to maintain the current threshold of 1 billion KRW. It is known that Deputy Prime Minister Hong expressed opposing views.
