극단 SangSangManBal Theater, Play 'Sputnik' Revival
From the 5th to the 15th at Sogang University Mary Hall Small Theater
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The theater company Sangsangmanbal Theater will perform 'Sputnik (written and directed by Park Hae-sung)' at Sogang University Mary Hall Small Theater from the 5th to the 15th.
Sangsangmanbal Theater is presenting a series of project performances exploring the origins of faith. 'Sputnik' is the third work in this series, discussing the belief that a better world exists. Previously, they performed 'The Origin of Faith 1,' which dealt with the belief that truth exists, and 'The Origin of Faith 2: The Wind of Fukushima,' which focused on the belief that science is an immutable truth.
'Sputnik' premiered last year at Daehangno Noun Theater and was nominated for the Baeksang Arts Awards' Best Play in 2020 and the Edaily Culture Awards.
The play features four characters living different lives in different countries: a psychological counselor whose life and job meanings are separate, a salesman who spends most of the year on business trips, a girl who bought a life jacket by selling her younger sibling’s Nintendo, and a soldier who wants to attend university after discharge. These ordinary people dream of another world for various reasons, not here and now, and the play connects the unremarkable daily lives of these special characters happening somewhere on Earth at this very moment.
'Sputnik' is named after the series of space development projects by the Soviet Union in 1957, which launched the world's first artificial satellite. The story begins with an imagination about 'Laika,' the dog aboard Sputnik 2. As the first living being to travel in space before humanity, what thoughts did 'Laika' have while looking at Earth from the satellite? The image of 'Laika' gazing at the Earth she cannot return to connects with the four characters who long for another world and wander, and simultaneously links to our own daily lives, dreaming of different worlds within our own lives.
