MS Releases 'HoloLens 2', Mixed Reality Device for Enterprises
[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] Microsoft (MS) launched the 'HoloLens 2' in South Korea on the 2nd.
HoloLens is the world's first wearable holographic computer that provides a mixed reality (MR) experience without connecting to a smartphone or PC. Mixed reality goes beyond virtual reality (VR), which blocks out the real world, and augmented reality (AR), which simply displays virtual information in the real world, by adding virtual information to the real environment to enable interaction.
HoloLens implements mixed reality as 3D holograms and allows users to freely manipulate them using hand gestures or voice commands.
The HoloLens 2 released domestically this time is designed for enterprise use. According to the company, it offers more than twice the field of view compared to its predecessor and provides an excellent immersive experience through controls using an AI-embedded depth sensor.
Made from ultra-light carbon fiber material to reduce weight and shifting the center of gravity from the face area to the back, it also enhances wearing comfort. An iris recognition feature has been added to enable fast and secure device use, strengthening its applicability in enterprises.
Especially as an AI-embedded 'intelligent edge device,' it allows sharing of work details implemented as holograms with team members via the cloud Azure. Based on this, it creates an environment where people can view the same information together in situations requiring large-scale projects or remote collaboration.
Applying HoloLens 2 in industrial sites can improve collaboration efficiency. Remote support enables collaboration even when far apart, and providing training and task instructions as 3D holograms helps employees acquire new skills faster.
According to Microsoft, 80% of companies that introduced mixed reality experienced improved collaboration efficiency among task force (TF) teams.
In fact, oil company Chevron established an efficient contactless collaboration foundation by eliminating face-to-face contact and sharing data such as manuals and drawings with the push of a button. For example, when an expert working from home shares the situation of an on-site employee wearing HoloLens through their computer monitor, the expert provides step-by-step guidance to the employee to resolve issues.
Domestically, Chungbuk Technopark is applying HoloLens technology to a virtual model project for gas safety equipment control and simulation, with plans to apply it to actual gas facilities in the future. Industrial AR solution company Virnect is supporting customers' digital transformation by developing an AR vehicle repair application based on HoloLens 2.
