[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The 'Wirye Line Urban Railway Basic Plan,' which has been underway for over 10 years, has finally received final approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, allowing the Wirye Line tram project to proceed in earnest.
With construction starting in 2021 and completion targeted for 2024, the total project cost is 261.4 billion KRW, and it is expected to greatly help alleviate the chronic traffic congestion in Wirye New Town.
On the 29th, the Metropolitan Transportation Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport approved the 'Wirye Line Urban Railway Basic Plan,' enabling the Seoul Metropolitan Government to officially implement the Wirye Line tram construction project.
According to the 'Wirye Line Urban Railway Basic Plan,' the project involves introducing an eco-friendly new transportation mode, the tram, connecting a total of 10 stations along the main line (4.7 km) starting from Line 5 Macheon Station, passing through the planned single-family housing site in Wirye New Town, Wirye Central Plaza, Wirye Transit Mall (Central), and ending at Bokjeong Station on Line 8 and the Bundang Line. Additionally, a branch line (0.7 km) will be constructed connecting 2 stations via the Wirye Transit Mall (South) to the additional Line 8 station currently under construction.
The tram will pass through apartment complexes inside Wirye New Town and the Wirye Transit Mall, allowing transfers to existing urban rail lines Line 5, Line 8, and the Bundang Line. With a total project cost of 261.4 billion KRW, basic and detailed designs will be completed this year, construction will begin in the second half of next year, and completion is scheduled for 2024.
