Launch of Personal Information Regulation Review Committee... Inho Lee as Private Sector Chairperson to Serve for 2 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Personal Information Protection Commission announced that the Personal Information Regulation Review Committee, established to innovate regulations in the field of personal information, was launched with its first plenary meeting on the 27th.
The Regulation Review Committee is composed of a total of 13 members, including government and private co-chairs: Choi Young-jin, Vice Chairman of the Protection Commission, and Lee In-ho, Professor at the School of Law, Chung-Ang University, along with government members and private experts. The committee will carry out its duties for two years until October 2022.
The Regulation Review Committee will not only review newly established and strengthened regulations but also undertake the maintenance and improvement of existing regulations, as well as review proposals from economic organizations and companies.
Private Co-Chair Lee In-ho is an expert who has actively engaged in personal information protection activities and has consistently provided policy recommendations regarding the role of the Protection Commission and directions for legal and institutional improvements. The appointed private members are also experts with extensive knowledge and experience in personal information protection law, new technologies, regulation and administration, industry, and civil society, and it is expected that they will promote balanced regulatory innovation between personal information protection and utilization in the future.

Yoon Jong-in, Chairman of the Protection Commission, emphasized, “There is a saying that a car can run faster thanks to its brakes, meaning that without properly protecting personal information, it is impossible to accelerate data utilization,” adding, “Safe utilization based on protection is what the Protection Commission aims for.” He also added, “Based on the members’ expertise and rich experience, balanced regulatory reviews between protection and utilization will greatly assist the Protection Commission in rationally promoting regulatory innovation.”
