[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The heads of eight local governments along the Korea-Japan Strait in Korea and Japan will hold a remote meeting.
This annual meeting is held to strengthen ties between cities and address current issues. This year, opinions are expected to be exchanged on current issues such as COVID-19 response and the discharge of radioactive contaminated water from Fukushima.
The 'Korea-Japan Strait City/Province/Prefecture Governors Video Conference' will be held on the 27th at 2 p.m. at the Fukuoka Economic Cooperation Office on the 26th floor of Busan City Hall.
The meeting will be attended by the heads of eight local governments: Busan, Gyeongnam, Jeonnam, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province in Korea, and Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Saga, and Yamaguchi Prefecture in Japan.
This year's theme is "COVID-19 quarantine response cases and current issues," a common issue for both Korea and Japan, and will proceed with case presentations by city/province/prefecture and adoption of a joint statement.
Busan City will present its response cases, including comprehensive quarantine strengthening during the COVID-19 crisis and a two-track policy of quarantine and economy to revitalize the local economy.
It will introduce cases such as the development of the world's first mobile Walk-Thru screening clinic, which established an international standard immediately usable on-site, contributing to the international community.
Byun Sung-wan, Acting Mayor of Busan, said, "Busan is a gateway city with many overseas entries, but there has not been a single case of secondary infection from confirmed cases entering from abroad, thanks to a systematic quarantine management system, and we plan to share this system."
Acting Mayor Byun added, "Recently, there has been much concern among Busan citizens about the discharge of radioactive contaminated water from Fukushima. I would like to take this opportunity to express our concerns and emphasize that transparent information sharing between Korea and Japan and a solution that respects the opinions of the international community must be derived."
The 'Korea-Japan Strait Governors' Meeting' is held annually on a rotating basis between cities of both countries, sharing major policy information of each city/province/prefecture through common theme presentations and promoting cooperative projects.
Since its launch in 1992, the Korea-Japan Strait Governors' Meeting has never been interrupted even once, establishing itself as a "symbol of friendly exchange" between Korea and Japan.
