The Korea Urban Awards, hosted annually by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, evaluate the sustainability and living infrastructure levels of 229 local governments nationwide over the past year. The awards select cities that have made efforts to improve citizens’ quality of life and urban competitiveness. This year, 22 local governments were selected.
Seongdong-gu, while promoting the Seoul-type Phase 1 project, the Seongsu Urban Regeneration Activation Project, contributed to the legislation related to regional coexistence, including the nation’s first ordinance to prevent gentrification and amendments to the Commercial Building Lease Protection Act. It established a foundation for sustainable urban regeneration through signing coexistence agreements between tenants and building owners and creating the Seongdong Safe Commercial Area.
Additionally, it received high praise for leading resident-centered urban regeneration projects such as supporting the establishment of the resident cooperative urban regeneration enterprise ‘Seongsu Jiaeng Cooperative,’ creating the resident anchor facility Seongsu Nanum Sharing Center, hosting the resident-led urban regeneration festival ‘Let’s Walk Only on Flower Paths,’ and developing local landmark streets (Atelier Street, Yeonmujang Street).
