Yeosu Coast Guard 'Detects' Shrimp Fishing Vessel Using Unauthorized Fishing Gear
Notice of Continued Crackdown on Illegal Fishing Activities Including Use of Unauthorized Phrases
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Yeosu Maritime Police Station announced on the 23rd that it has caught a vessel illegally harvesting marine products using unauthorized fishing gear.
Yeosu Maritime Police apprehended vessel A (4.95 tons, shrimp trawl), registered in Goheung, carrying unauthorized fishing gear?a shrimp square trap (shaped like a soccer goal, 3m×5m)?about 4 km west of Gaedo, Hwajeong-myeon, Yeosu City, at around 10:20 PM on the 22nd.
According to the Maritime Police, the captain of vessel A, Mr. B (male, 63 years old, resident of Yeosu), is suspected of departing at around 8 PM with two illegal square traps loaded and continuing fishing despite orders to stop from officers dispatched to the scene. Yeosu Maritime Police plan to investigate Captain B for violations of the Fisheries Resources Management Act and the Maritime Security Act.
Meanwhile, Yeosu Maritime Police will conduct joint maritime and land crackdowns starting next week until eradication on chronic local complaints such as illegal diving gear, coastal nets, and shrimp trawls.
