The 3rd Korea Toray Science Promotion Foundation Awards Ceremony Held
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] The public interest corporation Korea Toray Science Promotion Foundation announced on the 23rd that it held the 3rd Korea Toray Science and Technology Awards ceremony at the Korea Toray R&D Center in Magok, Seoul.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, only a minimal number of attendees including awardees, their families, and foundation officials were present at the ceremony, which was conducted in strict compliance with COVID-19 prevention measures such as wearing masks and temperature checks.
The Science and Technology Awards were given to Nam Won-woo, Chair Professor at Ewha Womans University, in the basic research category, and Cho Gil-won, Professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology, in the applied research category, each receiving a prize of 100 million KRW and a plaque.
Research funds were awarded to four teams: Jo Eun-jin, Professor at Chung-Ang University, and Lee Ki-ra, Professor at Sungkyunkwan University in the basic research category; and Kim Shin-hyun, Professor at KAIST, and Oh Jun-hak, Professor at Seoul National University in the applied research category. Each team will receive 50 million KRW annually for three years.
In his greeting, Chairman Lee Young-kwan emphasized the role and importance of science in solving the unprecedented challenges humanity faces in this era of change, expressing hope that continuous efforts will lead to greater achievements.
Toray President Akihiro Nikkaku (日覺昭廣) conveyed in a congratulatory video message his expectation that the Korea Toray Science Promotion Foundation will contribute to society through the promotion of science and nurturing of talent in Korea, as well as fostering friendly relations between Korea and Japan.

The Korea Toray Science Promotion Foundation accepts public applications annually for the Science and Technology Awards and research projects, evaluating candidates mainly on lifetime achievements, contributions, and creativity of the projects. Since 2018, it has selected six Science and Technology Award recipients and continues to support 12 research teams with funding.
